Gero Onsen Recommendations in Hida, Gifu

Risa

Gero is famous for Onsen, and one of top famous Onsen in Japan!

I think the best time to enjoy Onsen experience is in Winter season November to February, so we went there in December to get some refresh! We took a train from Nagoya which takes approximately 2 hours and 5000 yen for one way. Gifu is rich in nature, so it’s fun to watch the view from the train too. It was an absolutely great weekend getaway!

Here is our 1 night 2 days trips in Gero, Gifu in winter Onsen / Gourmet experience.

Staying at Gero Onsen Yamagataya

We decided to stay this ryokan – Japanese hotel for mainly food and Onsen purposes!

The ryokan offers a free shuttle bus yet we walked to the ryokan from Gero station which takes about 15 min. We arrived in the evening, checked in the hotel then we firstly enjoyed Onsen before the dinner! Obviously I cannot take a picture inside, so there is no picture but it was so good to have a 露天風呂 Roten-buro ( Open area Bath ) in winter.

Feeling more happiness to enjoy the view outside with cold weather, and take a onsen at the same time!

Little flower in the room was adorable!
We changed this yukata, and go to Onsen!
Normally in Ryokan, the staff bring food inside the room. It was so delicious!

Gero Onsen Gassho Village

I think 白川郷 Shirakawa-go ( world heritage site) is the most famous Gassho Village, but here in Gero you can see this kind of village too. The village scale is relatively small compared to Shirakawa-go, but still it’s nice to learn about the house, architecture and atmosphere!

This house is called Gassho-tsukuri, the angle and materials of roof is very interesting.

This area is also known as a 豪雪地帯 Gousetsu-chitai – heavy snowfall area, so this house is good for dropping snows while weakness is easy to get on fire. Therefore, these people in this area are really careful about the use of fire.

We found a place to enjoy 足湯 Ashiyu – Onsen for foot only.

You may wonder why there are oranges floating in Onsen? Orange contains a natural essential oils and nutritions which makes you relax, moisture your dried skin especially in winter!

Lunch at Steak Kangetsu

We were walking around Gero Onsen Gassho Village, then we bumped into this restaurant!

I wish I could go there once again, super highly recommended if you are nearby in Gero Area. We were so glad that we discovered this great restaurant coincidentally. First we thought there is just a ryokan, like accomodation but you can go in even you do not stay there.

Few years passed from this trip, but we still talk about this experience how nice it was. This is how much we really enjoyed this restaurant.

Hidagyu – Hida Beef was so soft and amazing!
